Powell/Mason Cable Car Turnaround

A large, circular wooden platform set into the pavement functions as the terminal turnaround for the Powell-Mason cable car line. Because the cable cars on this route are single-ended, they carry controls at only one end and cannot reverse direction on their own. A massive steel and timber mechanism allows the crew to rotate each vehicle one hundred and eighty degrees to prepare for the trip back toward Union Square.
