Pier 43 Ferry Arch

The Pier Forty-Three Ferry Arch stands as a prominent, classically styled portal at the corner of the Embarcadero and Powell Street. This structure is a decorated hoisting tower, built in nineteen fourteen to serve the Belt Railroad. It functioned as a vital mechanical link for loading and unloading rail cars onto the ferries that traversed the San Francisco Bay long before the great bridges spanned the water.
