The USS Pampanito is a three hundred eleven foot Balao-class submarine that rests against the concrete of Pier forty-five in Fisherman’s Wharf. Built at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in nineteen forty-three, this diesel-electric vessel spent the final years of the Second World War patrolling the Pacific. It is easily recognized by its long, cylindrical dark hull and the conning tower that rises above the water line, surrounded by the bustling activity of the wharf.
