Monarch Bear Grove is marked by a series of stone circles set into the earth, built from the remnants of a dismantled twelfth-century Spanish monastery. These scattered blocks, once intended by William Randolph Hearst for a museum in Golden Gate Park that was never constructed, now occupy the site where a concrete pit once held a captive California grizzly bear named Monarch.
