The equestrian statue of Juan Bautista de Anza stands near the north shore of Lake Merced. This bronze sculpture, weighing approximately eight thousand pounds, depicts the Spanish explorer in military uniform mounted on a galloping horse. It was a gift to San Francisco from the Mexican state of Sonora, presented in August nineteen sixty-seven to commemorate the explorer’s role in establishing the city.
