Fort Funston

Fort Funston is defined by its dramatic two hundred-foot sandy bluffs that drop steeply to the Pacific Ocean along the southwestern edge of San Francisco. While it is now a popular recreation area, the site was originally acquired by the United States government in nineteen hundred as the Lake Merced Military Reservation. It was renamed in nineteen seventeen to honor Major General Frederick Funston, a Medal of Honor recipient with deep ties to the city.
