Fort Funston

Fort Funston is defined by two-hundred-foot sandy bluffs that drop steeply to the Pacific Ocean, where powerful onshore winds create a landscape of shifting dunes. While today it is a popular coastal park, the site was established in nineteen hundred as the Lake Merced Military Reservation to protect the entrance to San Francisco Bay. It was renamed in nineteen seventeen to honor Major General Frederick Funston, a Medal of Honor recipient with deep ties to the city.
