The Doggie Diner head stands as a seven-foot-tall, fiberglass dachshund, wearing a bow tie and chef’s hat, mounted on a metal pole in the center of a roadway median. Designed in nineteen sixty-six by Harold Bachman, this figure served as the mascot for a popular Bay Area fast-food chain started by Al Ross in nineteen forty-eight. At its peak, the franchise included thirty locations, each marked by these grinning, three-dimensional heads meant to grab the attention of passing drivers.
