Whisky a Go Go

The Whisky a Go Go is marked by a tall, narrow sign bearing its name in white letters against a black background, rising above the busy storefronts of the Sunset Strip. When it opened on January sixteen, nineteen sixty-four, at eight-nine-zero-one Sunset Boulevard, it was built inside a former bank building. The founders, including Elmer Valentine, sought to recreate a Parisian discothèque experience, hiring female DJs to spin records from a suspended glass cage to keep the music playing between live band sets.
