The Hawaii State Library is distinguished by the prominent, heavy Tuscan columns that span its front facade on South King Street. Opened in nineteen thirteen, this flagship building was funded by a one hundred thousand dollar grant from industrialist Andrew Carnegie and designed by his brother-in-law, architect Henry D. Whitfield. It serves as the primary hub for the Hawaii State Public Library System, the only statewide public library network in the United States.
