Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani was one of the highest-ranking and wealthiest women in the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, a direct descendant of King Kamehameha the First. In eighteen eighty-three, she completed a grand Victorian mansion in downtown Honolulu known as Keōua Hale. Designed in the Second Empire style with a mansard roof and gas-lit interiors, the residence was intended to be a masterpiece of opulence, surpassing even ʻIolani Palace in size.
