Statue of Samuel Eliot Morison

The bronze figure of Samuel Eliot Morison sits casually atop a large, natural granite boulder on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, located between Exeter and Fairfield Streets. Dedicated in nineteen eighty-two, the sculpture depicts the renowned maritime historian and Harvard professor dressed in a simple windbreaker and a baseball hat, holding a pair of binoculars as if scanning the horizon. The artist, Penelope Jencks, integrated marine elements into the base, including bronze casts of starfish, crabs, and shells nestled into the stone.
