Grundmann Studios

Between eighteen ninety-three and nineteen seventeen, this location on Clarendon Street held the Grundmann Studios, a building that served as the center of Boston’s artistic life. Originally constructed as a skating rink, the structure was repurposed by the Boston Art Students Association to provide exhibition space and workspace for dozens of painters, sculptors, and architects. It took its name from Emil Otto Grundmann, the first director of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, who was a deeply influential figure to the young artists who filled the building.
