King's Chapel

King’s Chapel is defined by its massive, dark grey granite facade, a stark contrast to the surrounding city streets. Completed in seventeen fifty-four, this Georgian structure replaced the original wooden church established in sixteen eighty-six as the first Anglican house of worship in Puritan Boston. Because the local population largely opposed a state-sanctioned Anglican church, no resident would sell land for its construction, forcing officials to build it on the site of the existing public burying ground.
