The intersection of Main Street and Monument Avenue sits at the foot of Breed’s Hill, where a long, upward slope leads directly toward the granite shaft of the Bunker Hill Monument. The street itself is defined by antique lanterns and nineteenth-century brick rowhouses that line the route. This path was historically the main approach for those moving from the lower parts of Charlestown toward the high ground that became the site of the first major battle of the American Revolution on June seventeenth, seventeen seventy-five.
