Phipps Street Burying Ground

historic

Phipps Street Burying Ground is a seventeenth-century site where gravestones remain in their original, irregular configuration rather than being lined up in neat rows. Established in sixteen thirty, this burial ground served as the primary resting place for Charlestown for generations, back when the town was separate from Boston. The landscape here has been significantly altered by centuries of land filling and development, but the stones themselves, many carved by an anonymous local artisan known as the Charlestown Carver, still stand as they were placed.
