North Square is a small, sloping public space in the North End, marked by a ring of historic houses and a series of bronze sculptures that incorporate maritime themes. It has been occupied since at least the sixteen thirties, making it one of the oldest public squares in the United States. Throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it served as a hub for merchants and political leaders, including the Mather family and silversmith Paul Revere.
