The Carnegie Museum of Art is defined by a massive, skylit hall that houses over one hundred and forty full-scale plaster casts of architectural masterpieces. Opened in nineteen oh seven, this space was modeled after the ancient Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. While other institutions in the early twentieth century discarded their collections of replicas, this gallery preserved its casts, making it one of the three largest such collections in the world alongside those in London and Paris.
