Schenley Plaza

Schenley Plaza is defined by the expansive, one-acre Emerald Lawn, a vibrant green space tucked between the University of Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Library. Beneath this lawn lies the stone arch of the Bellefield Bridge, which was constructed in eighteen ninety-eight to span a deep ravine then known as Saint Pierre Hollow. By nineteen fifteen, that ravine was filled with over eleven thousand tons of earth—reportedly sourced from the removal of the Grant Street hump in downtown Pittsburgh—to provide a level foundation for a grand formal entrance to Schenley Park.
