Carnegie Mellon University occupies a sprawling, dense campus in Pittsburgh distinguished by its blend of Beaux-Arts architecture and modern research laboratories. Founded in nineteen hundred by industrialist Andrew Carnegie, the institution began as the Carnegie Technical Schools, a place intended for the children of Pittsburgh’s working class to learn practical trades and crafts. Carnegie, a Scottish immigrant who built a massive fortune in steel, famously inscribed his personal motto, "My heart is in the work," above the entrance to the original building.
