Cataract Island

landmark

Cataract Island, known locally as Boaruka, is a rocky landmass that sits directly on the crest of Victoria Falls, near the western bank of the Zambezi River. The name Boaruka is a Tonga word that means divider of waters, reflecting how the island splits the river’s massive flow to create the Devil’s Cataract. It is a place of active geological transformation, as the river is currently carving a new path through this section of the basalt rock to eventually form a future gorge.
