David Livingstone Statue

monument

The bronze statue of David Livingstone gazes sternly toward the Devil’s Cataract from the Zimbabwean bank of the Zambezi River. Standing over ten feet tall on a thirty-seven-ton granite base, the monument depicts the Scottish missionary and explorer in a reflective posture. It was sculpted by the artist William Reid-Dick, who traveled fifteen thousand miles to the falls to study the site before beginning his work. The statue was officially unveiled on August fifth, nineteen thirty-four, by Howard Unwin Moffat, the former Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia and a nephew of Livingstone’s wife.
