Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe side)

landmark

Victoria Falls is a massive curtain of falling water that drops over a basalt ledge one thousand seven hundred and eight meters wide. This natural wonder is fed by the Zambezi River and plunges more than one hundred meters into a deep, winding gorge, creating a spray that can rise four hundred meters into the air. While the local Lozi people have long known the site as Mosi-oa-Tunya, or the smoke that thunders, it was renamed in eighteen fifty-five by the Scottish missionary David Livingstone to honor the British monarch, Queen Victoria.
