Redfern Park

Redfern Park is defined by its collection of mature Canary Island palms and Moreton Bay fig trees, which shade a landscape that has shifted from a nineteenth-century pleasure garden to a hub of Australian political history. The twelve-acre site, once a wetland area known as Boxley’s Lagoon, was gazetted as a park in eighteen eighty-five and designed by civil engineer Charles O'Neill. Its paths and layout retain the Victorian-era intent, even as the grounds evolved to house community sporting facilities, including the adjacent oval that served as the long-time home of the South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby league team.
