Aboriginal Medical Service Redfern

The Aboriginal Medical Service in Redfern occupies a building at thirty-six Turner Street. It is the first Aboriginal community-controlled health service in Australia, established in nineteen seventy-one to provide medical care that was free and accessible to local Indigenous families. At that time, many people faced systemic neglect and racism in mainstream hospitals, often being turned away if they could not pay cash upfront for treatment.
