Capitol Theatre

The Capitol Theatre in Haymarket stands out for its facade of thirty-six arched bays, still featuring the original terra cotta reliefs of fruit and foliage from its time as the New Belmore Markets in eighteen ninety-two. This building has undergone several dramatic transformations, serving as a produce market before being rebuilt in nineteen sixteen to house the Wirth Brothers Hippodrome. During those circus days, the basement level contained cages for lions and a twelve-meter-wide reinforced concrete tank, built to stage performances featuring polar bears and seals.
