The Queen Victoria Building fills an entire city block in central Sydney, marked by a massive copper-sheathed central dome and twenty smaller surrounding domes. Opened in eighteen ninety-eight, this Romanesque Revival structure was designed by architect George McRae to honor the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The project was commissioned during a severe economic recession, specifically intended to provide employment for out-of-work stonemasons, plasterers, and glass artists who shaped its intricate sandstone facade and arched interiors.
