Pyrmont Bridge

Pyrmont Bridge is defined by its massive central steel span, which pivots on a concrete and sandstone base to open for passing ships. Spanning three hundred sixty-nine meters across Cockle Bay, the structure features unique timber truss approaches made from Australian ironbark. Opened in nineteen oh two, the bridge replaced an earlier wooden crossing and was designed by engineer Percy Allan. It stands as one of the oldest surviving electrically operated swing bridges in the world, once powered by electricity from the nearby Ultimo Powerhouse.
