Australia Square is defined by its fifty-storey circular tower that rises one hundred and seventy metres above the surrounding city streets. Completed in nineteen sixty-seven, the building was the first true skyscraper in Sydney and, at the time, the world’s tallest lightweight concrete structure. Its architect, Harry Seidler, chose a round shape to avoid what he described as the dark canyon effect often caused by tall buildings, allowing more light to reach the ground.
