Mrs Macquarie's Chair

historic

Mrs Macquarie’s Chair is a sandstone ledge cut into the shape of a bench on a peninsula reaching into Sydney Harbour. Convicts hand-carved the seat into the rock overhang in eighteen ten. It sits on a point once known to the Gadigal people as Yurong Point, now named Mrs Macquarie’s Point in honor of Elizabeth Macquarie, the wife of Major-General Lachlan Macquarie, who served as Governor of New South Wales from eighteen ten to eighteen twenty-one.
