The Block is defined by the modern, high-rise student accommodation and mixed-use buildings that now rise above the streets of Redfern. This site, bounded by Eveleigh, Caroline, Louis, and Vine Streets, became a center for urban Aboriginal life in the nineteen thirties when families moved here for proximity to industrial jobs. By the early nineteen seventies, faced with widespread discrimination in the private rental market and threats of eviction, residents occupied derelict houses on the site.
