The Golden Water Mouth stands ten point seven meters high at the intersection of Hay and Sussex streets, catching the eye with its trunk of yellow-box eucalyptus partially covered in twenty-three-carat gold leaf. Installed in nineteen ninety-nine, the sculpture serves as a symbolic entrance to Chinatown. Its design incorporates the five elements of Chinese feng shui—wood, water, earth, fire, and metal—to harmonize the city environment and encourage good fortune.
