Chinatown Sydney

Sydney's Chinatown is marked by two ceremonial paifang gates, featuring pagoda-style roofs and gold leaf inscriptions, that stand at either end of the Dixon Street pedestrian mall. This district in the Haymarket quarter has been a center for Chinese community life since the late nineteenth century. While early migrants settled in other parts of the city following the gold rush, the community consolidated here by the nineteen twenties.
