Green Park

Green Park is defined by the ornate bandstand sitting at its center, a structure erected in nineteen twenty-five that once hosted public concerts during the interwar years. Located between St Vincent’s Hospital and the site of the former Darlinghurst Gaol, this public space is bounded by Burton Street, Victoria Street, and Darlinghurst Road. Though it is named for Alderman James Green, who represented the district from eighteen sixty-nine to eighteen eighty-three, the park is frequently associated with Alexander Green. He was a notorious assistant hangman at the nearby gaol who lived in a whitewashed hut on this land during the eighteen forties before his house was destroyed by fire and he was eventually committed to an asylum.
