Hong Kong House stands at the corner of Druitt and York Streets, identifiable by its ornate Victorian Free Classical facade of red brick and decorative sandstone. Built in eighteen ninety-one and designed by architect Ambrose Thornley, the five-story structure was originally commissioned by the Excelsior Land, Building and Investment Company as the Central Hotel, later known as the Gresham Hotel. A banking chamber occupied the ground floor for decades, serving the local business district alongside the hotel’s guests.
