The Royal Exhibition Building rises above the Carlton Gardens with a massive octagonal dome modeled after the cathedral in Florence. Architect Joseph Reed designed the structure to embody the wealth and ambition of Melbourne during the late nineteenth century, finishing the brick, timber, and steel project in just eighteen months for the eighteen eighty international exhibition. Above the base of the dome, the words Victoria Welcomes All Nations still greet those arriving at the site.
