Melbourne Town Hall is defined by its corner clock tower, known as Prince Alfred’s Tower, which rises above the intersection of Swanston and Collins streets. Designed in the Second Empire style by architect Joseph Reed, the building occupies the site of an earlier town hall that was demolished to make way for this more ambitious structure. The foundation stone was laid on November twenty-ninth, eighteen sixty-seven, by Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, and the building officially opened on August eleventh, eighteen seventy.
