The Nicholas Building, completed in nineteen twenty-six, is recognizable by its imposing, chalky-white terracotta facade that rises ten stories above the corner of Swanston Street and Flinders Lane. Designed by architect Harry Norris for the Nicholas family—who earned their fortune manufacturing the pain reliever Aspro—the building was constructed as a speculative office development rather than a headquarters. Its exterior features a solid base of four floors with Doric columns, topped by vertical bays defined by Ionic pilasters and a wide cornice, all crafted in a style known as Commercial Palazzo.
