Princes Bridge features three wide, arched iron spans supported by dark bluestone pillars. It connects the central city at Swanston Street to the southern suburbs by way of St Kilda Road, crossing the Yarra River. This bridge is the third permanent structure to occupy this site; it opened in eighteen eighty-eight after a design competition produced a structure modeled on the Blackfriars Bridge in London.
