The Shrine of Remembrance is defined by a ziggurat roof that rises high above the Kings Domain parkland, its heavy granite form inspired by the ancient Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. Built between nineteen twenty-seven and nineteen thirty-four, this war memorial was designed by two Melbourne architects and returned World War One veterans, Phillip Hudson and James Wardrop. It stands as a monument to Victorian service in the First World War, though it now commemorates the sacrifice of all Australians in conflict and peacekeeping.
