Alexandra Gardens features a line of historic rowing boathouses stretching along the south bank of the Yarra River. This five-hectare park sits opposite the Melbourne city center, occupying land that was once a network of swamps, brick pits, and timber-cutting fields. The area was altered between eighteen ninety-six and nineteen hundred when engineers dug a straightened channel for the river, using the excavated spoil to fill the low-lying lagoons and elevate the bank into flat, garden-ready terrain.
