Sandridge Bridge

The Sandridge Bridge is a steel girder structure that crosses the Yarra River at an unusually sharp angle. Completed in eighteen eighty-eight, it was one of the first railway bridges in Melbourne to use steel rather than iron. The bridge rests on hollow iron columns filled with concrete, which feature ornamental cast-iron pediments at their tops. John Monash, later a famous military commander, worked on the construction of this bridge as a young engineering student.
