The high stone walls and expansive footprint of Fort d’Issy mark this as a survivor of a grand nineteenth-century defense program. Built between eighteen forty-one and eighteen forty-five under the direction of Prime Minister Adolphe Thiers, it was one of six detached forts designed to shield Paris from external attack. The site’s elevation overlooking the surrounding landscape made it a strategic anchor, yet its proximity to the city and design limitations rendered it vulnerable during the rapid changes in warfare that defined the era.
