The Manufacture des Tabacs in Issy-les-Moulineaux is defined by its long, imposing brick facade and a prominent, soaring chimney that rises forty-five meters above the site. Built between nineteen hundred and nineteen hundred four to replace a production facility in Paris, this complex served the French state tobacco monopoly for decades. At its peak, the factory floor hummed with the work of over one thousand employees—mostly women—who hand-rolled millions of cigarettes.
