Barrière d'Enfer

The Barrière d’Enfer consists of two identical neoclassical pavilions that face each other across the Place Denfert-Rochereau. Built between seventeen eighty-seven and seventeen eighty-eight, these stone structures were designed by the architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux as part of the Wall of the Farmers-General. This massive barrier once circled Paris to enforce the collection of taxes on goods like wine, livestock, and construction materials entering the city.
