Catacombs of Paris

The Paris Catacombs are identified by a small green pavilion located at the Place Denfert-Rochereau. This entrance marks the gateway to an extensive network of underground limestone quarries that stretch beneath the city, now functioning as the world’s largest ossuary. Within these tunnels rest the remains of approximately six million people, moved here during the late eighteenth century when the city’s overflowing cemeteries created severe sanitation crises and structural collapses.
