La Santé Prison is marked by high, austere stone walls that occupy an entire trapezoidal block in the fourteenth arrondissement. Inaugurated in eighteen sixty-seven, this facility was designed by the architect Émile Vaudremer to replace older Parisian jails, and it remains the last prison operating within the city limits. Vaudremer structured the grounds using the natural slope of the terrain, separating detainees into distinct zones that include rectangular blocks for nighttime confinement and a hub-and-spoke division for daily life.
