Quartier de la Butte-aux-Cailles

The Butte-aux-Cailles rises as a hilly village in the thirteenth arrondissement, distinct from the surrounding city for its narrow cobblestone lanes and absence of grand boulevards. While the name often brings to mind the quail bird, it actually honors Pierre Caille, who purchased the hillside vineyards here in fifteen forty-three. Because the ground is honeycombed with old limestone quarries, the area avoided the large-scale demolition and modernization that reshaped much of Paris in the nineteenth century.
