The Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière is recognizable by its prominent octagonal dome, which rises sixty-five meters above the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital complex. King Louis XIV commissioned the building in sixteen sixty-nine to serve the thousands of residents living within what was then a sprawling institution for the destitute, the elderly, and the sick. The architect Louis Le Vau initially planned the structure, though Libéral Bruant completed the work by sixteen seventy-eight.
