Thermes de Cluny

The Thermes de Cluny consist of a monumental complex of stone and brick bands, representing some of the most substantial Roman-era ruins in Paris. Built around the beginning of the third century for the ancient city of Lutetia, these public baths were likely funded by the local guild of boatmen. The frigidarium, or cold room, features stone consoles supporting the vaulted ceiling that are carved in the shape of ships' prows, indicating the maritime interests of the guild that commissioned the work.
